Surface Finish on 316 Stainless Steel Enclosures
B&R Enclosures manufactures specifically for Australian conditions and finish 316 stainless steel enclosures to a maximum Ra of 0.4 μm. However they are far from the general case and most other manufacturers would have a rating of 0.5 μm or worse. It is worth noting that ASSDA state that there is a “marked decrease of the corrosion resistance as the surface roughness increases above a Ra value of about 0.5 micrometers”.
This attention to the surface finish ensures that it is more difficult for salts to build up on the enclosure surface and therefore helps to reduce corrosion.
The higher level of surface finish also ensures that the enclosure is more suitable to applications in the food industry and is generally of a higher quality feel than other competitive enclosures.
B&R Enclosures use a system of belt grinding and linishing in accordance of ASSDA standards. This helps the enclosures last longer in the field and more effectively resist attack from chlorides such as salt water common along the coastal fringes and inland areas of Australia.
